Dramatic chalk cliffs overlooking the iconic Needles. The headland meets the open vistas of the English Channel, where the white rocks of The Needles jut out of the sea, fronted by a small lighthouse. Backed by soaring downland all the way to Freshwater village and beyond, this is a wild, open corner of the Island full of rare species of wildlife. Tennyson monument, in honour of Alfred Lord Tennyson, is at the pinnacle of downland starting at Freshwater Bay. Also in the area: Alum Bay tourist attraction with cable cars to and from beach, and Compton Bay, a beautiful long beach with black and terracotta sands, and surfers’ paradise.
