Bonchurch is a village with a distinctively Victorian atmosphere. Built into the undercliff, it has a large pond at its centre and many desirable period houses. Home to Victorian authors and poets, the Bonchurch area featured in Ken Russel’s ‘Lady Chatterley’ TV series. Monk's Bay is Bonchurch's atmospheric pebble beach with cottages and esplanade nearby.
Sprawling Victorian Mansion dating to 1824, set in 300 acre grounds of lawn and woodland, overlooking the English Channel. The house has original wooden panelling and flooring throughout, and intricate ornate ceilings. Childhood home of Victorian poet Algernon Swinburn. East Dene is run as an Allnat Centre, and for hire on an events basis. On the doorstep is Winterbourne House, once frequented by Dickens; Monks Bay; Bonchurch Old Church and a larger Victorian church; The Bonchurch Inn with its beautiful courtyard area; and the woodland of the Landslip.
